Word Of Mouth - Spring 2007
Can we prevent cavities before they start? Finally, answer is yes! Scientists now understand that plaque, the thin film on your teeth, is a disease that causes cavities. By altering the pH balance of the oral environment, we can now target and prevent caries. That's why I routinely provide a Caries risk Assessment and screen each of you with a Caries Susceptibility Test at least once a year.
Why annually? Your risk factors are known to change over time, as changes occur in your environment, saliva, systemic health, diet and medications. After assessment, the actual test takes only a moment. That's when I rub two of your teeth with a swab, place the swab in a special meter, then read the results. The process seems minor but the rewards of receiving appropriate treatment are immense.
By using proven therapeutic rinses when indicated, in combination with regular visits and a good home care routine, it is actually possible to control the caries disease process even under restorations, return your mouth to health, and prevent cavities before they start.
I am proud that I can give each of you confidence and trust in your continued oral health by providing effective diagnostic and treatment systems.
Q: What are cavities and how do they occur?
A: Cavities are the destruction of your tooth enamel caused by eating foods high in starches and sugars. Oral bacteria mix with these food to produce acids which eat away at your tooth enamel, resulting in cavities.
As I write this brief column I am sitting in the airport waiting for a flight to Chicago. The dental teaching group which I am a faculty member is having the Grand Opening of its teaching facility in Chicago. We will finally have a home base. I had hoped it would be west of the Rockies but no such luck.
New news in the office is Andrea had a little baby girl, and I am happy to report both mom and baby are doing well. We look forward to having Andrea back with us in a few months. We are currently interviewing dental assistant candidates to join our team so we can provide you even a higher level or service.
Please take a look at the articles in this newsletter. We implemented the CariFree system in January and are already having patients in for their rechecks. We are finding much healthier months at this follow-up. It is great to finally have a way to be proactive in the fight against decay.
On the back page of the newsletter is a description of our fantastic referral program. Many of our patients are taking advantage of these great gift cards. Refer a friend and you to can be shopping at Macys, Best Buy, Home Depot or sipping lattes at Starbucks.
My family and I have had a good winter of snow skiing, even with the minimal snow fall. My daughter's season was unfortunately cut short when she broker her leg January 2nd. Her youngest brother is skiing very well. By next season he will be too fast for me to keep up with.
I wish everyone good health for 2007.
Thanks!
